Patrick Hines, MD PhD

Professor, Wayne State Univ. Critical Care Physician. Founder & CEO, Functional Fluidics

Dr. Hines is an accomplished physician, scientist, innovator, and entrepreneur. He has spent over 20 years performing ground-breaking research on the contribution of red blood cell health to human health, and is the author of numerous peer reviewed publications in this field. As a pediatric intensive care medicine physician, his passion for translating basic science innovations into patient care is inspired by the critically ill children he treats in the ICU. Dr. Hines is internationally recognized for his efforts to develop and validate a gold standard diagnostic test for the assessment of red blood cell health in clinical practice. These tests have paved the way for physicians to treat patients with the first FDA-approved medications designed to improve the health of red blood cells. These tests have also been shown to predict pain crises in individuals with sickle cell disease, revolutionizing the treatment model from crises intervention to health maintenance.

Dr. Hines was selected as an Aspen Health Innovation Fellowship within the Aspen Global Leadership Network and recipient of the Crain’s Detroit Business 40 Under 40 award. He completed both his fellowship in critical care medicine and pediatrics residency at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He received his M.D. degree and Ph.D. in Pharmacology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Hampton University. Most importantly, Dr. Hines is blessed to have the support of his wife, Aliya Hines, a dermatologist who cares for our nation’s veterans at the Detroit VA Hospital, and his sons Elijah and Spencer.
